Desert Adapted Rhino
NamibiaThis has to be one of the toughest yet most rewarding assignments that I have ever undertaken. Not only are the desert adapted rhino the most endangered mammal in Africa, they inhabit some of the most inhospitable habitat on the continent. One of the oldest and driest deserts on earth is where these animals call home. It is here under some really unique protection that they eke out an existence and thrive on eating highly toxic plants. Amazing access granted to me by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism allowed for a real close up experience when the rhino capture unit darted and moved a number of these rhino. The Save the Rhino Trust who have been entrusted with monitoring the rhino also provided invaluable help and support to us in trying to locate individual rhinoʼs. After my first hand experience in working under these tough conditions I really respect the work that is being done to ensure their continued survival.
