The Phoenix, a ship that personifies greed and corruption, and a total lack of respect for the environment ran aground on South Africa’s coastline. Apparently she was on her way to the scrapyards in India, with very little insurance and without much concern for the well being of the crew. The floundering ship has been well documented by many of the major news tabloids so, the challenge was to get something a little different. I really wanted to put the ship in some form of context and so concentrated on the rocky shoreline where she has finally ended up. The line of the black rocks leads the eye through to the ship, the white foam spray and the ship balance each other nicely and the decision to go with black and white to accentuate the drama. Composition, composition is what really makes this image work.
